 Forensic Investigators’ Society, Nigeria Adopts Standard Operating Procedures at 2026 Annual Conference

The Forensic Investigators’ Society, Nigeria (FISN) has announced the adoption of comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for forensic investigations following deliberations at its Annual Conference 2026.

The conference, which brought together forensic experts, criminologists, legal practitioners, law enforcement officers, and academics, focused on strengthening forensic investigation practices in Nigeria and promoting professional standards in the administration of justice.

During the conference sessions, participants emphasized the urgent need for uniform procedures in forensic investigations, particularly in the areas of crime scene management, evidence collection and preservation, chain of custody, forensic documentation, and expert reporting.

At the end of the deliberations, the conference resolved to adopt a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to guide forensic practitioners and investigators in carrying out their duties in line with internationally accepted best practices while addressing the realities of the Nigerian investigative environment.

According to the Society, the newly adopted SOPs are expected to:

• Promote standardization in forensic investigative processes

• Strengthen the integrity and preservation of physical and documentary evidence

• Enhance professional accountability among forensic practitioners

• Improve the reliability and admissibility of forensic evidence in courts

• Support training, research, and capacity development in forensic science

Speaking after the conference, the Director, Professional Development, Dr. Olayinka Onayemi an Associate Professor of Criminology noted that the adoption of the SOPs marks an important milestone in the institutional development of forensic investigation practice in Nigeria. The procedures will serve as a professional guide for investigators, forensic analysts, and related professionals involved in criminal and civil investigations.

The conference also encouraged collaboration between forensic professionals, law enforcement agencies, legal institutions, and academic bodies to ensure the effective implementation of the SOPs across Nigeria.

The Forensic Investigators’ Society, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to advancing forensic science, strengthening investigative standards, and contributing to the improvement of justice delivery through scientific methods of investigation.
